STM questions people actually ask

Can I buy short-term health insurance after losing my job?

Yes — job loss is the classic STM use case. Coverage can start the next day and last up to the term limit your state allows. Watch for COBRA deadlines: you usually have 60 days to elect it, and STM can bridge that window.

Does STM cover pre-existing conditions?

No. STM is medically underwritten and excludes pre-existing conditions. If you have ongoing care needs, check ACA marketplace special enrollment instead.

How long can I keep an STM plan?

Terms run 30 to 364 days. Federal rules allow renewals up to 36 total months, but many states cap it shorter — some restrict to 3 months, a few ban STM entirely.

Why is STM so much cheaper?

Because it covers less: no pre-existing coverage, no essential-benefits mandate, and healthy applicants only. You trade comprehensiveness for price.

What happens if I get sick and the plan ends?

Nothing continues — STM does not renew automatically after the term, and new conditions from the expired term may be excluded on a fresh application.
